LOD 350 - BIM Model
About The Project
This project includes one of Europe's most significant railway stations, which serves as a critical transportation hub. The train station and its surrounding infrastructure required detailed BIM modeling to capture every intricate aspect of this vital facility. An Irish surveying company tasked us with modeling the station’s 550K SF area, encompassing primary structures, railway tracks, docks, warehouses, and metal infrastructure. This complex project demanded high precision to ensure every element aligned with future developments and renovations.
We delivered a comprehensive LOD 350 BIM model that included detailed representations of the station’s exterior, rail lines, platforms, docks, and surrounding infrastructure. The model also captured essential components such as lighting, signage, and other features critical to functionality. Given the station’s dense and intricate layout, capturing the full scope of the project required advanced technologies and highly accurate modeling, ensuring specialized treatment of each element. These deliverables support ongoing renovations and future enhancements at railway station.
To achieve this, we utilized LIDAR and Photogrammetry to generate accurate point cloud data, forming the foundation for precise modeling. By combining cutting-edge technology with a collaborative approach, we produced a detailed BIM model that reinforces the railway role as a modern, efficient transit gateway.
Project Challenges & Deliverables
The railway station project presented several unique challenges due to its massive scale and high level of detail, with a vast array of different infrastructure elements. One of the primary challenges was the need to meet a high LOD 350 (Level of Detail), which meant that every infrastructure component had to be meticulously categorized and modeled to the highest precision. This included the railway, metal infrastructure, industrial buildings, and multiple docks, each with unique properties — all of which required specialized modeling techniques to ensure that each element met the necessary standards and regulations.
The multi-disciplinary nature of this project required expertise across several areas, as we were tasked with modeling various types of infrastructure elements, each with its unique requirements. The railway network itself was extensive and required precise modeling of each track and connection. The metal infrastructure, including supports, beams, and other steel elements, had to be captured with exacting detail. Additionally, the site included industrial buildings and docks, each with its own set of challenges, from different materials to distinct structural features.
Our team worked in close collaboration across these multiple disciplines, ensuring that all elements were integrated into a cohesive BIM model. Despite the complexities, we successfully delivered a comprehensive LOD 350 BIM model that met all client requirements, adhering to the necessary standards and regulations. This model not only supports the ongoing renovation of the train station but also provides a solid foundation for future development and infrastructure upgrades.
